Smoking Illnesses

smoking illnesses

It’s Time Smoking is Regarded as an Enemy to the Human Race!

Smoking is an omnipresent addiction that is equally lethal in all parts of the world. Unfortunately whenever the facts and figures related to smoking are released, they invariably belong to the developed nations and rarely cater to the third world countries. Even the anti smoking measures are in their full force only in the developed countries or in the affluent societies of the lesser developed ones. This deadly addiction is not taken seriously in a wide geography of the world. The developed countries have realized, though that smoking is effectively engulfing their most important resource i.e. the human resource. Over and above this smoking is also leading to huge scale wastage of the hard earned money of people. Thus the developed countries in the world have started a rigorous campaign against one of the most lethal enemies of the human race and the human environment.

The anti smoking measures have been taken up in all earnestness in the developed countries. Very effective and detailed awareness programs are being conducted with the intention of keeping people far from this addiction and to help the addicts give up. Unfortunately the smokers have agreed to the fact that these costly awareness programs have done very little to inspire them to quit smoking but still the campaigners are not losing heart. They are carrying on with full vigor to bring into light the harms that smoking inflicts to the human body and mind and also to some other dangerous aspects of smoking such as passive smoking. Along with the awareness programs, very stringent ban have come into effect in these countries. The bans have been tightly implemented and the authorities look into the fact that these bans are properly followed. In order to tighten the grip over smoking, several regions of the US and the UK the cigarette rates have been hiked up. The authorities behind this step agree that though the hiking up of prices won’t help the smokers quit smoking; they would definitely keep the impulsive smokers away from this addiction. In the developed countries people also get the assistance of the quit smoking drugs like chantix. Most of the population of the developed countries has access to the internet from where they can easily buy chantix. With the prescription the people can buy chantix online, stay away from the chantix side-effects and try to quit smoking. This is one anti smoking measure that is quite biased. I say biased because chantix can safely be said to be targeted at a particular section of the society. Unfortunately these medicines don’t target the whole of human society. Most of the anti smoking measures fail to reach out to the majority of the smokers and as a result the overall smoking rate in the world doesn’t witness much of a fall.

The major matter of concern is that even the governments of the underdeveloped, developing and poor countries fail to acknowledge the smoking ill effects. They feel there are other serious issues for them to look into apart from smoking. But they fail to see that smoking is no less than a militant; an internal militant that is constantly aiming to harm the citizens. It is the primary duty of any government to safeguard and protect its citizens. Thus they should also seriously tackle the addiction of smoking and do something substantial to fight it. Sadly all the anti smoking measures in the third world countries are only there to ordain the papers. They are almost non existent practically. It is imperative that smoking is regarded as a deadly enemy of the human race by the governments of these countries. Only then can there be some hope of improvement in the smoking scenario of the backward countries and regions.

Layered stressors in sheltered homeless African-American mothers.

$69

One of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population in the United States is families, with women and their children heading up to 90% of these families. African-Americans represent a disproportionate number within the homeless population. Homelessness is a devastating experience for women and their children who often seek an emergency homeless shelter as their only option for temporary housing. This grounded theory study explored how homeless African-American mothers and their children defined their health and managed and obtained their health for themselves and their children within the context of an emergency homeless shelter. The grounded theory of Layered Stressors emerged after fifteen homeless African-American mothers were interviewed. Health was perceived by the participants as “having your own.” In the first stage, a perceived “loss of self-control” or loss of autonomy was given over to the shelter. In the second stage, homeless mothers experienced layered stressors which consisted of “following the shelter’s rules,” “living with strangers,” “mothering in public,” “changed behaviors of their children,” “smoking more,” “feeling trapped, helpless and powerless,” “shared infectious illnesses.” Chronic stress affects an individual’s physical, psychological and social make-up and may contribute to allostatic load, the cumulative biologic burden exacted on the body and brain. McEwen (2002) described allostatis, and allostatic load as stressors. Allostatic load may contribute to chronic medical illnesses.

 Nicotine Addiction: Principles and Management

Nicotine Addiction: Principles and Management

$94.99

Despite persistent warnings from the medical profession about the health risks involved in cigarette smoking, millions of people continue to smoke cigarettes. With contributions from renowned experts, this ground-breaking work defines and explains nicotine addiction as a primary problem or disease, instead of as a habit or risk factor for other diseases. A comprehensive, clinical text on tobacco dependence, this book provides clinicians with essential information on how to diagnose and treat nicotine addicted patients. It also offers the medical, epidemiological and behavioral science backgrounds necessary for understanding the process and dynamics of tobacco dependence. Following the traditional format of medical texts, the book first covers etiology, pathogenesis and complications, then diagnosis and treatment, and finally public health and prevention. Part One presents an overview of the biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to nicotine dependence, including such topics as a description of nicotine delivery systems, psychopharmacology, economics, natural history and epidemiology, mortality, morbidity, and environmental tobacco smoke exposure. The second part offers practical guidelines and tools for treating nicotine dependence and describes a stepped-care treatment model with brief interventions that can be easily integrated into routine medical practice. This section also covers the role of psychopharmacologic and formal treatment programs, the treatment of smokeless tobacco addiction, and treating nicotine dependence in pregnant women and in people with medical illnesses, other chemical dependencies, or psychiatric disorders. The last section focuses onworksite and community intervention programs and summarizes the research on smoking patterns and history in women, Blacks, Hispanics, youth, and older adults, discussing how intervention and prevention programs could be made more effective in these groups. Promoting Health: Intervention Strategies from Social and Behavioral Research

Promoting Health: Intervention Strategies from Social and Behavioral Research

$40

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Americans enjoyed better overall health than at any other time in the nations history. Rapid advancements in medical technologies, breakthroughs in understanding the genetic underpinnings of health and ill health, improvements in the effectiveness and variety of pharmaceuticals, and other developments in biomedical research have helped develop cures for many illnesses and improve the lives of those with chronic diseases. By itself, however, biomedical research cannot address the most significant challenges to improving public health. Approximately half of all causes of mortality in the United States are linked to social and behavioral factors such as smoking, diet, alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, and accidents. Yet less than five percent of the money spent annually on U.S. health care is devoted to reducing the risks of these preventable conditions. Behavioral and social interventions offer great promise, but as yet their potential has been relatively poorly tapped. Promoting Health identifies those promising areas of social science and behavioral research that may address public health needs. It includes 12 papers commissioned from some of the nations leading experts that review these issues in detail, and serves to assess whether the knowledge base of social and behavioral interventions has been useful, or could be useful, in the development of broader public health interventions.

Public health and the nursing role: contemporary principles and practice

$47.5

Public health and the nursing role: contemporary principles and practice is an essential resource which reflects the growing need for all nurses to maintain and improve health as well as treating illnesses. This book takes as its starting point that the aims of public health and health promotion are key components of the nursing role and daily nursing care. Writing in a clear and lively style, the authors provide both an academic and practical account of public health for all nursing practice. The role of the nurse in improving health is explored in the context of the scope of nursing practice and working with patients and interprofessional colleagues. Key nursing skills of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care are outlined before the authors demonstrate how nurses can make important interventions on health issues such as mental health, obesity, sexual health, smoking, alcohol and long term conditions. Smoking: 201 Reasons to Quit

Smoking: 201 Reasons to Quit

$19.95

About thirty million Americans who smoke say they want to quit, but lack the motivation. Smoking: 201 Reasons to Quit provides that motivation by focusing on why you should not smoke, rather than how to quit. The book contains a complete in-depth explanation of the dangers and disadvantages of smoking. The book describes more than one hundred ways that tobacco harms smokers’ health, often leading to prolonged disability and early death. A medical advisory panel of prominent physicians has reviewed these sections about tobacco-related illnesses. The book includes discussions of problems caused by nicotine addiction, the best methods of quitting tobacco, the health hazards of secondhand smoke to others, and the ways that smoking increases the dangers of injury and death. Jack Klugman, star of stage and screen and an antismoking activist who fortunately survived the cancer caused by his smoking, wrote the book’s foreword.
