The first reason can be that the depression may be an indication of nicotine removal, and stoppage of smoking can precipitates depression. Second reasons can be nicotine which may have antidepressant gist that sustains smoking for some smokers. Antidepressants can be a substitute for the smoking habits.
There are many smokers who want to quit and they are not able quit the smoking habits. There is some therapy used to stop smoking cessation such as NRT (nicotine patches or gum).There are some other option used for smoke cessation that are antidepressants drugs. These antidepressants are mainly used to reduce or cure depression.
Researchers have proved that when antidepressants used with nortriptyline and nicotine patch may help to stop smoking. There are various different types of antidepressant medication that are effective to stop smoking habits. But according to the studies conducted by the researchers has terminated that nortriptyline when blended with transdermal nicotine ensued the stop rate of smoker.
This result took place with petite effect on removal of symptoms. Many researchers have done studies to find the remedy for smoking cessation. The researchers were successful in their research and they found many remedy of stopping the smoking habit.
According to their research conducted bupropion and nortriptyline proved to be very effective to cessation. In one trail the researchers found that bupropion with nicotine patch gave slight higher cessation rate than patch alone. After many trails and studies researcher found that all the antidepressants are not able to stop smoking habits. But there were two antidepressants which proved to be good for smoking cessation. The researchers also found that some antidepressant used to stop smoking habits had side effects on the smoker.
The use of bupropion causes side effects like insomnia. Other side effect which was found by the use of such drugs was dry mouth and vomiting. So it can be concluded that the antidepressants are successful in smoking cessation, but some time it also results into side effects.

A national study of OB/GYN residency directors smoking cessation education of residents. $49.99 The purpose of the current study was to survey the directors of OB/GYN residency programs in the United States to determine the content, depth, teaching methods, and performance evaluation methods of their tobacco cessation curriculum. Surveys were mailed to all 276 directors of OB/GYN residency programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (allopathic programs) and the American Osteopathic Association (osteopathic programs). A four wave mailing procedure was utilized. The response rate was 58% (160/275). Of the respondents, 64% were male, the mean age was 51 years. The vast majority of respondents were Caucasian/Non-Hispanic White (83%). Most programs (91%) reported having an institutional policy that prohibits tobacco use on residency property. Half of OB/GYN residency directors reported that their program did not have a tobacco education curriculum; 10% taught some content on an informal basis; and 40% reported having a formal tobacco education curriculum. Most residency programs invested less than an hour of instruction on basic science topics during the entire residency program. A range of 42% to 56% of residency programs spent less than an hour on basic science topics. Of the three curricular content areas, socio-political topics received the least amount of instructional time. A range of 63% to 89% of residency directors reported investing no time teaching the socio-political aspects of tobacco use prevention and cessation. Most residency programs (44% to 57%) invested less than an hour of instruction on clinical science topics. The three most prevalent teaching techniques used by residency faculty members to teach tobacco related content were classroom/conference style teaching (71%), one-on-one teaching by preceptor or attending physician (61%), and patient-centered counseling (36%). Smoking Cessation Interventions $68.4 This study examined medical students’ and residents’ attitudes and beliefs regarding smoking cessation interventions. Each participant completed questionnaires comprised of demographic items, three scales (i.e., Physicians Counseling Smokers, Self- Efficacy Scale, Motivation Scale), and several items related to attitudes and beliefs about smoking and smoking cessation. Overall, findings from this study failed to demonstrate reliable differences in attitudes and beliefs across levels of medical training. One significant difference was detected for one measure of role beliefs, indicating students believe more strongly that it is part of the physician’s role to assist patients in efforts to stop smoking compared to residents. Additionally, it was found that the vast majority of medical students and residents in this study had never heard of the Clinical Practice Guideline, which is a document published for use by all healthcare professionals and considered to be a standard of care for smoking cessation interventions. This finding may be used to help inform future medical training, so that the Clinical Practice Guideline will be incorporated into the curriculum. |
