Stop Smoking Using Self Hypnosis   by Stuart Rix

Using self hypnosis to quit smoking

Self hypnosis is usually thought of as a person listening to an audio tape, CD, mp3, or other mass-produced media, intended to induce a willingness to absorb suggestions centered on a specific topic such as stopping smoking.

We could spend millions in advertising, constantly harass you about the dangers of smoking but there are much more effective and gentle ways for you to stop smoking. If you’re a smoker, you’ve no doubt been alerted– by family members, doctors and even perfect strangers–to the dangers of smoking, making you feel something between being mildly annoyed to downright hostile to all their well intended advice. Whether you have been smoking since your adolescence or if you only recently became genuinely addicted, using hypnosis to quit smoking can help you get on top of the intense cravings that most people experience when they try to quit smoking.

In case you’re thinking that this hypnosis thing is a bunch of hippies on drugs or something crazy like that, I should tell you that both the American and British Medical Associations have recognized hypnosis as a valuable tool in medicine and psychology. In basic terms it means that hypnosis is effective in dealing with the way we think about things. “Hypnosis is the use of suggestion, whether direct or indirect, to induce a heightened state of suggestibility in which there is bypass of the critical faculty of the mind, and selective attention to suggestions given.

No matter how you feel about using hypnosis to stop smoking, the only way to discover whether or not it works is to try it yourself. One of the best ways of doing this is to use a self hypnosis program which has been specifically designed for the purpose of stopping smoking. It is also a good idea to use someone such as Paul McKenna who has a solid reputation for hypnosis that works. Paul counts pop stars, celebrities and royalty among his dedicated followers and his many successes.

Hypnosis works because it alters your subconscious mind. The subconscious is that part of you that handles all of your involuntary thinking and actions. It keeps your heart beating and your lungs breathing, it helps you drive your car without the need to concentrate and think about every action you to take. It is also the seat of habits and cravings, and guess what it also does, it makes you want to take that next nicotine fix. The subconscious as well as controlling your heartbeat also controls your metabolism and the chemical processes necessary to sustain life. When these are out of balance the subconscious kicks in and drives you to take in chemicals such as nicotine by creating massive cravings.

Using self hypnosis can help bypass these barriers that exist at the conscious level and let your subconscious mind come up with the sorts of ideas, solutions that it is so good at. Basically, to assist you in stopping smoking, hypnosis is used to help get your conscious mind out of the way and replace thoughts and feelings about pleasure, relaxation, and satisfaction associated with having a smoke and replaces them with equally good or even better feeling associated with not having a cigarette or tobacco. To the degree that our awareness is absorbed in and identified with our thoughts, when we are in an hypnotic state we are able to change associations so that in your normal waking state lit will feel good not to smoke.

Though using hypnosis to quit smoking does appear to work in the short term, there is still much debate as to the long-term effects of the treatments. Numerous people recommend that stop smoking hypnosis therapy be used in conjunction with other stop smoking methods such as nicotine replacement stop smoking products like the patch or nicotine gum.
